What is enrichment and why does it matter?

When we think of exercise for our dogs, the first thing that comes to mind is often physical exercise to keep dogs healthy and happy. And of course it is incredibly important- walkies, safe off-lead time and outdoor adventures are loved by dogs and their owners globally. But it's not just their legs that need exercising- mental stimulation matters too for exercising, engaging and stimulating your dogs busy brain!

So what exactly is enrichment? Enrichment is all about giving dogs opportunities to engage and display natural doggy behaviours- think sniffing, licking, chewing, problem-solving and safely exploring their environment. Giving our dogs opportunities like these provide mental stimulation and play a vital role in supporting optimum wellbeing.

Sometimes the behavioural problems we are seeing in our dogs can be linked to frustration, boredom or unmet needs. And where there's a lack of appropriate outlets for those natural doggy behaviours and mental engagement, we may see dogs who are restless or destructive, who struggle to settle or who otherwise struggle to cope with any big feelings they're feeling!

The good news is enrichment doesn't need to be complicated, expensive or a chore. In fact, quite the opposite! Enrichment can be creative and fun for both dogs and their owners. It can help give you the chance to get to really know what your dog loves to do, how their brain works and the things they find fulfilling. It can help strengthen the bond between dog and human by encouraging a more thoughtful and supportive relationship as you truly get to understand your dog and their needs.

Simple activities that encourage natural doggy behaviours such as using a lick mat, scatter feeding or problem solving a food puzzle are all great sources of mental enrichment that encourage calm, relaxing behaviours.
